Antareja : knight of the lord of the underworld

Antareja - Anantaraja, or more often abbreviated as Antareja, is one of the puppet characters that is not found in the Mahabharata because it is originally created by Javanese poets. He was the eldest son of Wrekodara or Bimasena of the Pandava family.

In the classic puppetry version of Surakarta, Antareja is another name of Antasena, while the Yogyakarta version mentions Antasena as the other sister of Antareja's mother, besides Gatutkaca. Meanwhile, in the puppeteering era, surakarta version of puppeteers generally also described Antareja and Antasena as two different figures.

Origins

Antareja was the eldest son of Bimasena who was born to Nagagini the daughter of Batara Anantaboga, the serpent god. Bima and Nagagini's marriage [ in the puppet play Bale Sigala - Gala] occurred after Pandawa survived the burning of Bale Sigala - Gala created by Kurawa to kill Pandawa

Bima then left Nagagini pregnant. Antareja was born and raised by Nagagini until growing up he decided to find his real father. With napakawaca heirlooms given by Anantaboga and Mustikabumi Ring given by Nagagini, Antareja went to Amarta Kingdom.

In the middle of the road Antareja found the body of a woman loaded in a driverless boat. Using Napakawaca, Antareja revived the woman, who was none other than Subadra Arjuna's wife.

Suddenly Gatutkaca attacked Antareja. Gatutkaca is indeed being tasked with supervising Subadra's body to catch the perpetrator of her aunt's murder. The revived subhadra broke up the two nephews and introduced each other.

Antareja and Gatutkaca were delighted with the meeting. Bima's two sons cooperated and finally managed to catch the real perpetrator of Subadra's murder, Burisrawa.

The story of Antareja's appearance for the first time in Javanese puppetry is commonly referred to as Sumbadra Larung.

Magic

Antareja has Ajian Upas Anta given Hyang Anantaboga. His tongue is so powerful, any creature licked in the soles of his feet will meet death. Anatareja is napakawaca skinned, so immune to weapons. He also has a Mustikabumi ring, given by his mother, who has power, keeps away from death as long as it touches the earth or the ground, and can be used to revive death beyond destiny. Anantareja's other powers can live and walk in the earth.

Nature

Anantareja has an honest nature, quiet, very devoted to the older and dear to the young, willing to sacrifice and great trust in the Creator. He was married to Dewi Ganggi, daughter of Prabu Ganggapranawa, king of snakes in Tawingnarmada, and son of Arya Danurwenda.

After adulthood Anantareja became king in the country of Jangkarbumi entitled Prabu Nagabaginda. He died before the Bharatayuddha war on the orders of Prabu Krishna by licking the soles of his feet as the Tumbal (sacrifice for victory) of the Pandava family in the Bharatayuddha war. Actually, antareja's death was intentional by Javanese poets because in Kakawin Bharatayuddha and Kakawin Mahabharata there is no Antareja figure.
